Embedding Google My Maps Code In HTML Websites

In the 104th episode of Semantic Mastery's weekly Hump Day Hangouts, one participant asked about the difficulty he was having embedding Google My Maps on an HTML website using Google Maps API.

The exact question was:

When building a html website site today in Notepad+ the Google maps API section displayed as expected on desktop yet when I launched/uploaded the site on the server I got an error along the lines of “”oops somethings went wrong the page didn't load Google Maps properly””

I had to Google the problem and found this quote “”If you are using the Google Maps API on localhost or your domain was not active prior to June 22nd, 2016, it will require a key going forward. To fix this problem, please see the Google Maps APIs documentation to get a key and add it to your application:””

I had to sign into Google and generate a key when in the past I didnt have to – does this mean that google is now tackling people using a method of embedding maps on websites to help rank in maps or does this just mean when building websites for clients i am going to have to generate a key attached to my Gmail account for their site, or use their Gmail account to generate a key so they can have a location map on their site? Thanks
